BAEN Belgium
Study Abroad Program
Now in its fourth year, the BAEN Department has an environmental study abroad
program that takes up to 20 students from Texas A&M
and 2 faculty members from the BAEN Department to the Katholieke
Universiteit of Leuven
(KUL), in Leuven,
Belgium. The
study abroad program is a 5-week summer (July/August) program that offers four
courses, BAEN 460 (Principles of Environmental Hydrology) and BAEN 465 (Design
of Biological Waste Treatment Systems) for engineering students and AGSM 335
(Soil and Water Management) and AGSM 337 (Technology for Environmental
Engineering) for non-engineering students. The study abroad program focuses on
European methods of surface and groundwater collection for drinking water,
waste water treatment technology, protection of soil and water resources from
non-point source agricultural contamination, compost/manure management, and
biogas production. At least four field trips take students to view
environmental projects in the Netherlands,
Germany, France and other parts of Belgium. In
addition, at least four seminar speakers from Belgium and European Union
regulatory agencies meet with the class and give presentations on European
policies designed to protect soil and water quality from agricultural
contaminates.
