The Research Committee of UCOWR presented the 1998 Dissertation Awards at its annual conference in Hood River, Oregon in August. The awards were given to the best dissertation or thesis in each of three areas (Water Management, Water Quality, and Water Processes).

Recipients include:

• Water Quality: Jennifer Crawford, University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign for her paper titled, "Anaerobic Dissipation of Herbicides in Microbiologically-Induced Soil Redox Regimes."

 
• Water Processes: Youn Sim, University of California, Irvine for his paper titled, "Virus Transport in Physicochemically Heterogeneous Porous Media".

 
• Water Management: David W. Watkins, Jr., University of Texas at Austin for his paper titled, "Optimization Techniques for the Planning and Management of Robust Water Resources Systems.
